At the November
mixed sale at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, KY, an attractive,
spunky colt entered the sales ring. His mother had just sold
in foal to A.P. Indy for a salty $1.7 million. The bidding on
the colt promised to bring top dollar and when the action hit
$600,000 something spooked the weaning colt and he flipped in
the sales ring.
Quickly,
he stood up like nothing had happened, but the bidding stopped.
The colt
returned to Lane's End Farm to prepare for the following year's
September Yearling sales also held at Keeneland. This time there
was a reserve on the colt and his bid was not attained.
Back to
the farm he went, again.
Finally,
the Gone West-Nice Assay colt was shipped to California to join
the rest of the horses owned by John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery,
and to train for the March Barrett's 2-year-old sale.
At the preview, where prospective buyers inspect young horses
and time them working one-eighth or one-quarter of a mile, the
Gone West colt went one-eighth of a mile in 10.9 seconds.
Once more
the colt went through the sales ring and again his reserve price
was not attained.
The Gone
West-Nice Assay colt "came home" again and the name stuck.
Came Home
joined trainer J. Paco Gonzalez at Santa Anita Park, but his
training was off to a slow start due to a persistent cough.
Gonzalez wanted the cough completely cleared up before Came
Home resumed heavy training and that took time.

Finally,
Came Home is about ready to make his first start. His last work
was one-half mile from the gate with jockey Chris McCarron and
the team was clocked in :48 1/5 and galloped out five furlongs
in 1:00 2/5.
So, let's
welcome Came Home to Horsing Around. He's a new star to follow.
Let's hope he comes home a winner.
