At various times throughout the year KTTC honors an outstanding member with the Member of the Month Award. This honor goes to a member of the organization who has performed distinguished work in the field of Thoroughbred racing. The honoree receives a commemorative plaque from KTTC and is archived on the KTTC web site as an example of racing's talented young fans.

KTTC Member of the Month July 2001

Layla Marefat

Kids to the Cup is proud to recognize Layla Marefat as our Member of the Month for July 2001.

Layla lives in the heart of horse country, Lexington, KY and loves to write about her passion. Check out her collection of poems in the Look Here section of KTTC's web site and you will quickly agree that this young racing fan has talent beyond her years.

The collection: A Horse's Thoughts in the Derby; Unlucky; A Charismatic Derby; Flight Without Wings; and He is of the Triple Crown.

Prominent Thoroughbred owner's Bob and Beverly Lewis were impressed with Layla's poems, particularly A Charismatic Derby, which recounts that steed's triumphant Run for the Roses.

Layla used her considerable writing talents to win a trip to the 2001 Santa Anita Derby in KTTC's nationwide Essay Competition. Then, she joined fellow members at Churchill Downs for the most recent edition of the Kentucky Derby.

Because of her commitment and dedication to writing about Thoroughbred racing and her willingness to share her creations with all of us, KTTC announces Member of the Month for July 2001: Layla Marefat.
