Thoughts
of Gold
By
Lauren Haggerty
The golden
sun is rising
In the far off eastern sky.
And the stable boys are laughing
As sparrows take up and fly.
A gentle voice whispers,
Rising me from my sleep
A brush is pulled across my withers
And a hand picks up my feet.
Every morning I wake up
It's always the same.
Red roses and a golden cup,
Seem to me the only reasons we came.
I've heard everyone talking,
About the derby, the rose.
What do you think they're expecting?
Why, me winning I suppose.
But is really worth all this?
All their dreams and hopes,
Will be gone if I miss.
It might even make them look like dopes.
For spending the money,
For me to be in this race,
Then suddenly I think its no longer funny,
For the look on my trainer's face,
As he watches me run,
Is so happy, and so proud.
Here I am with everything as golden as the sun
And thick mist covering the ground,
And I think for the first time
About what I've said
And something new comes to mind.
These thoughts are only in my head.
The real reason I'm here
Is because they have faith in me
That's why they don't fear
Of losing their hopes and dreams.
So tomorrow I'll run my heart out,
It's what I do best.
Then I'll give a loud shout.
And my worries will be laid to rest.
