KTTC Longacres Mile 2004
By Sophia Mangalee
The day dawned gray and rainy, but the weather could do little to dampen the enthusiasm of the first five KTTC members to reach Emerald Downs.
Morning workouts consisted of little more than a few lonely horses backtracking on the sealed surface, but a surprise appearance by Seabiscuit star jockey Ricky Frazier brightened things up. Ricky answered questions about his experience as Tobey Maguireís double and explained more about his movie career. After signing autographs and taking pictures, the group ventured into the Emerald Downs backside and visited the barn of trainer Doug Driever.
In the Driever barn Longacres Mile contender Best On Tap was enjoying his therapeutic blanket when the KTTC group arrived at his stall door. The horse approached for a better look. The group did the same.
KTTC members also had a chance to meet other Driever-trained horses slated to run that afternoon, as well as the opportunity to learn more about racing tack and equipment. KTTC members were amazed at the small exercise saddles and intricate bits on display.
The morning moved quickly and more KTTC parents and members joined the group inside the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Sales Pavilion. Guest speaker Ralph Vacca talked about the racing industry and pointed out opportunities available to young people including the Youth Broodmare Lease Program.
KTTC parents and members then toured the equine library the unique Emerald Downs veterinarian facility.
After a full morning on the backside, the day was still just beginning.
KTTC members watched the afternoon's first two races from the sixth floor of the grandstand with track announcer Robert Gellar and the stewards. The bird's-eye view of the races was spectacular despite the cloudy afternoon.
The next race was named in honor of Kid's to the Cup and the group visited the paddock before the race. Amazingly, the rain, that had been falling all day long, stopped in time for the group to pose in the winner's circle for photos with the winning connections.
Of course, later in the afternoon the group enjoyed a stirring renewal of the historic Longacres Mile.
Once again, Emerald Downs was phenomenal in their support of Kids to the Cup on Longacres Mile Day. The track continues to be a huge supporter of KTTC by offering tours, seating, lunches, and special gifts.
Much thanks to Kerry Dalton and Susie Sourwine for helping make this day wonderful for some very grateful racing fans!
