Santa Anita
Derby weekend 2002 was the third time KTTC members have visited
Santa Anita and it may have been the best trip ever.
A group
of 35 began the day at Clocker's Corner where they had breakfast,
watched morning workouts and met with jockeys Gary Stevens,
Kent Desormeaux and Joy Scott.
Then they
visited the barns of trainers Jenine Sahadi, John Sadler, Richard
Mandella and Bob Baffert. The trainers and their assistant trainers
rolled out the red carpet for the group with hands-on explanations
of the inner-workings of a stable. The tour covered feeding,
grooming, training methods and, of course, lots of horses.
In the afternoon
the group attended the races, but KTTC members didn't just watch,
they joined in the production.
Jonathan
Horowitz, a 16-year-old from Irvine, battled through a bad case
of laryngitis to give an accurate call of the third race on
Friday.
Ryen Hanna,
and Abbey Jorstad, visiting from Washington, interviewed winning
jockeys Corey Nakatani and Tyler Baze after the seventh and
eighth races, respectively, on Santa Anita's Fox Sports West
broadcast.

Earlier,
following the second race named in their honor, the entire group
posed in the winner's circle with the living-legend, Laffit Pincay,
Jr., a real treat.
Friday night
they visited The Derby Restaurant in Arcadia and owner Chip
Sturniolo provided dinner and a tour of the facility and its
wonderful racing memorabilia.
A cherry
was added to the top of this fantastic weekend when KTTC president
Trudy McCaffery's Bosque Redondo won the San Bernardino Handicap
and Came Home charged to the front to win the Santa Anita Derby.
Visiting the winner's circle following these races are moments
these kids will never forget.
Kids to
the Cup is a charity designed to attract, educate and develop
young racing fans and is open to youngsters 8-16.
